Conference Information

The 2004 National Youth Leadership Conference will be held July 24 – 27, 2004 in Washington, D.C. The theme for the Conference is LEARNING, LIVING, LEADING: YOUTH WITH DISABILITIES CONTINUING THE LEGACY. Participants will have exciting opportunities to learn from national disability leaders, public officials, and other young leaders with disabilities from all over the country.

Conference Goals

Conference goals include helping prepare the next generation of disability leaders and identifying ways to improve policies and supports for young people with disabilities.

  • DISCOVER how government works and ways to advance leadership in your local community.
  • LEARN leadership and career development skills.
  • SHARE IDEAS for improving the lives of young people with disabilities.
  • NETWORK with past and future disability leaders and make contacts that will spark new ideas and inspire you to work toward your dreams.

The Conference is led by the Governing Board of the National Youth Leadership Network (NYLN). The National Youth Leadership Network is a youth-driven, youth-led organization comprised of young adult leaders with disabilities. The NYLN strives to promote leadership development and education ensuring that all youth with disabilities have the opportunity to attain their maximum, unique, and personal potential.

Who Can Attend the Conference?

Approximately 65 young leaders will be chosen to participate. Most will be between the ages of 18 and 24, however a small number of youth that are 16 or 17 years old will be chosen as “Emerging Leaders.” Transportation, lodging, and meals will be provided. Participants will be chosen and notified by April 15, 2004.

How to Apply

A completed application includes:

  • An application form that is entirely filled in and signed (unless done online);
  • Answers to the 3 essay questions.
  • A letter of reference from someone who is not related to you saying why they think you should be selected to participate in the Youth Leadership Conference as an emerging leader.

You may complete your application online, on paper (MS Word document or PDF) or, If you would prefer to complete the application in an alternate way (such as audiotape or videotape), contact Elizabeth Guerrero at guerrere@ohsu.edu.
